LEARNING
ACTIVITIES FOR 4 YEAR OLDS:
-Join in simple board
and card games that depend on chance, not strategy; emphasis should be
on playing, not winning. (ex. Candyland, Hi-Ho Cherrio)
-Provide puzzles with
5 to 10 pieces (depending on your child), counting and alphabet games
and matching games.
-Offer various kinds
of simple scientific and math materials: ruler, magnifying glass, simple
scales; activities such as collecting leaves and sprouting seeds.
-Appreciate the child’s
spontaneous rhyming, chanting, silly name-calling, jokes, and riddles.
-Continue daily read-aloud
times; encourage the child to supply words or phrases, to guess what comes
next, to retell the story; go to the library regularly, allowing the child
ample time to choose books.
-Encourage all kinds
of vigorous outdoor activity; water play in sprinkler; offer unpressured
swimming, tumbling, or dancing lessons.
