NHS Sponsors Blood Drive
February 23
Volunteering can be a very worthwhile activity, and it can take many different forms! Sometimes even rolling up your sleeve can change a life! On Tuesday, February 23, CCS was visited by the Hoxworth Blood Mobile and many students, parents, faculty and staff rolled up their sleeves to give blood to those whose lives depend on it. This was the second year for the National Honor Society to sponsor the blood drive. The National Honor Society officers organized and directed the blood drive and the entire high school was encouraged to take part. Also, students who were too young to give blood made cookies or provided juice for those who did give blood. Please come out next year and roll up your sleeve. Someone’s life depends on it! CCS Wins Art Contest Again!
For the fourth time, Calvary Christian School has produced a winner in the Annual Poster Art Contest for RIVER SWEEP 2010! Out of 2000 entries, Calvary Christian School 12th grader, Kara Heineman, has won runner-up for her grade level in the 2010 River Sweep Poster contest. She'll receive a $50 savings bond for her art work.

RIVER SWEEP began in 1989 and is sponsored by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO). It is a one-day cleanup project for the Ohio River that covers more than 3,000 miles of shoreline in six states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Thousands of volunteers participate in the event, collecting more than 20,000 tons of trash and debris. Trash collected over
the years has included stolen cars, tires, furniture, toys, a wedding dress, a piano, appliances, and much more. All trash collected is either recycled or placed in approved landfills.
THE POSTER CONTEST is open to schools bordering the Ohio River and its tributaries to create an awareness of the problem caused by litter in our rivers and streams. Students in primary and secondary schools (public, private, and home school; K-12) are invited to design posters for the River Sweep event each year. The contest is conducted on an annual basis; students must submit their artwork by mid-December and designs are judged in January. Congratulations, Kara!

First and Sixth Graders Become Reading Buddies
Calvary's first and sixth grades have teamed up to become better readers and writers. A sixth grader is matched up as a reading buddy with a first grader. They bring books to read to each other on a regular basis. The sixth graders also write a child's book to share with their partner later in the year. The first graders write their first ever book report and share it with their buddy. On Wednesday, December 16, they met for the first time to meet and share Christmas books with each other. What a blessing for both groups!

Fifth Graders Wrap Bibles for Kicks for Kids

Mrs. Dunlap’s Fifth Grade Class
On Thursday, December 10, 28 fifth graders helped the Kicks for Kids Organization and got to meet its founder, former Cincinnati Bengal, Doug Pelfrey. Kicks for Kids have been providing help for at-risk children in the Greater Cincinnati area for the past 15 years. While Mr. Pelfrey’s Kicks for Kids charity focuses on meeting the physical needs of children, as a Christian, he recognizes the greater need to share the love of Christ. During his annual Kicks for Kids Christmas parties, the love of Jesus is shared by reading the Christmas story and giving each child a new Bible. Mrs. Dunlap’s fifth graders were blessed to be able to wrap these Bibles in beautiful Christmas paper and learned that helping to share the love of Jesus is the greatest blessing of all!
Calvary Seniors Visit Cincinnati Shakespeare Company

On Wednesday, December 2, CCS students from AP Literature, English 12, and Drama took a fabulous field trip! The students, accompanied by CCS teachers, Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Krumpelman, spent the day at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, followed by lunch at a choice of local Taylor Mill restaurants. The offering this year was a highly entertaining rendition of The Taming of the Shrew. While staying faithful to the Shakespearian language, the acting company took liberties with sets and costuming. Shrew was set in 1930’s old Hollywood. Each character in the play portrayed double personae. The likes of Gene Autry, the Marx Brothers, and Errol Flynn, just to name a few, made cameo appearances. The choreography and slap-stick physical comedy was outstanding! After lunch, most of the students ended the day at Altiora’s Coffee Shop for some relaxing fellowship before heading back to CCS!
Third Graders Visit Indianapolis Children's Museum
On November 24, the third graders visited the Indianapolis Children's Museum in Indianapolis. On the way there, a semi-truck turned over right in front of us! Thankfully, the lady driver was not hurt. As we traveled on, God gave us a beautiful day, and Mr. Dean was a great bus driver. After visiting the wonderful museum exhibits from 10:30 am - 3:30 pm, we stopped in Shelbyville on the way home for dinner. It was a fabulous field trip! Click here for more pictures.
Season’s Greetings from the Cougar Council
During a recent Elementary Cougar Council meeting, council members created homemade Christmas cards with personal messages for residents of Rosedale Nursing Home. This project is the result of the council’s desire to reach out to the community and encourage others through their service. As one member put it, “I want to be a role model and inspire others, and I want to be a good leader.”

Biology Lab Studies

Students used worms to begin to understand how organs and systems are laid out in different specimens. They learned about different textures and thicknesses of tissues. Students also used the worms to practice making precise incisions being careful not to cut too deeply into the specimen. The students will use this knowledge as they progress on to other specimens to teach them learn more about the World that God has created for them. They also took notes on these specimens to be able to recall this information for a test or quiz. Click here for more pictures.
Book Fair Update
CCS recently hosted our annual Book Fair to raise funds for the school library. The school used a different fair sponsor this year called Books for Funds, out of Williamsburg, Kentucky. Students and parents enjoyed shopping for picture books and chapter books at the fair. Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase new books for the school’s library collection.

Pumpkin Day
First grade celebrated Pumpkin Day on Wednesday, November 11. The first graders gutted pumpkins, ate toasted pumpkin seeds and popcorn, learned about fractions and seeds, and heard several pumpkin stories including The Parable of the Pumpkin. Many thanks go to the many parent volunteers who made this day a great success. See more pictures here.
Anthony Baldoni Reaches 1,000 AR Points
At the end of October, Anthony Baldoni became our second student to reach 1000 cumulative points in Accelerated Reader. Anthony started the program three years ago and has read steadily since then. He read harder, longer books like the Dragons in our Midst series by Bryan Davis which gave him his points in larger chunks. Great job, Anthony!

CCS 5th grader, Leah Swinford and Christopher Edwards with William E. Durr library workers
On November 20, the fifth grade class collected goodies for the Kenton County William E. Durr Library located in Independence. As part of their annual “Thankfulness for Others Project”, CCS students wanted to show gratefulness to those who work in our community and volunteer to help make our library so wonderful. The fifth graders brought in snacks and made thank you cards, and then had them delivered to the Durr Branch for the workers and volunteers to enjoy during the week of Thanksgiving.
Calvary Christian Sixth Graders Donate to Action Ministries
As part of a thankfulness project during the month of November, the sixth grade students brought donations of food items for the Action Ministries’ “Food for Thought” program. The purpose was to provide healthy foods for Action Ministries to distribute as weekend snack packages to area children who are in need. Small cereal boxes, pudding cups, applesauce cups, fruit cups, boxes of raisins, popcorn, cocoa mix, peanut butter crackers, cheese crackers, and boxes of fruit drinks were brought in by the CCS students. Sixth grade student, Caity Floyd said, “We can be the hands of Christ by helping this way.” And Marie Diehl stated, “It makes me feel like we are making a difference in our community.”
"Thank you so much for doing the food drive for Food For Thought. I got word yesterday that our men picked up over 100 pounds of food at Calvary Christian School. All of the items are the ones we use in the Program and they will greatly help us in keeping down our costs. Please pass on our sincere thanks to the students, parents and faculty for their support.
I'm attaching a note I also received yesterday from one of the Family Resource Coordinators in the Kenton County District. Unfortunately, she didn't sign her name, so I don't know which school.
I'm hoping the scan is good enough that you can read what she has to say and understand how important this program has become to many of our students.
Again, thank you. Our best wishes to all of you for a wonderful Thanksgiving."

Astronomy Comes to Life for Calvary Eighth Graders
On November 11, the eighth grade class visited the Cincinnati Observatory Center. Coordinated by Miss Becky Erwin, CCS MS Science teacher, the astronomy that the students were learning in class came to life when they got to actually experience some of the work of astronomers. The highlight for most students was their chance to look at explosions on the sun. Using one of the telescopes, students were actually able to look at the sun using a special filter. They also learned how to use a sundial and how the sun's position changes over time.
Fifth Grade Visits Answers in Genesis Creation Museum
The fifth graders recently completed a unit covering fossils and dinosaurs. The content in this unit specifically addressed how fossils and dinosaurs should be observed through the lens of God’s Word. Students had the opportunity to compare and contrast the Creationist and Evolutionist points of view using Scripture as their guide. The visit to the Creation Museum was an excellent culminating activity, further supporting and extending their Christian world view. See more pictures here.

Calvary Christian School students preparing for the ACT
On Thursday, November 5, Calvary Christian School hosted their annual ACT (American College Testing) preparation class. Mandatory for all juniors, CCS also allows sophomores and seniors to attend more than once in order to gain confidence in taking their ACT. Organized by CCS Guidance Counselor, Melody Dickens, the ACT course was taught by ACT Prep Coordinator, Mrs. Wednesday Oster. CCS high school students were given an excellent understanding of what will be on their upcoming, college-required ACT and were provided with invaluable tips for successfully taking the test. For a nominal fee which included the seven hour course, each student also completed ACT review sessions of English, Math, Reading and Science Reasoning.

It was a brisk morning on Saturday, October 24, as 36 golfers united for the 1st Annual Calvary Christian School Fundraising Golf Scramble at Fox Run Golf Course. Participants included current/former school parents, business associates, friends and even three CCS students! Golfers, sponsorships and donations from school parents and area businesses helped to raise almost $17,000 toward Calvary’s “Bridge the Gap” campaign which helps to balance the budget and keep tuition fees low. Thank you to all who supported our Golf Scramble, and we hope to have even more golfers next October, 2010! Click here for more pictures.

Calvary Students Volunteer for
STAR 93.3 Fundraiser

Pictured left to right: Kelsey Curry (Alexandria, KY) and Christiana Sandberg (Walton, KY)
After a typical day at school on Tuesday, October 6, five members of the National Honor Society boarded the van along with their adviser, Mrs. Martin, to travel to the WAKW radio station STAR 93.3. After arriving and receiving a review course on how to answer the telephone using a headset and what to ask the caller, the CCS students were off to an exciting evening. Everyone was a little nervous at first, but after the first call, each student jumped at the chance to be the first one to receive the call.
Each year, STAR 93.3 has a fall Share-a-thon Program where funds are raised to help with the needs of the radio station. Due to the overwhelming amount of phone calls received, the station needs volunteers to help take the phone calls and record the information from each caller giving a donation.
Besides receiving a STAR 93.3 t-shirt and drawstring bag, each volunteer also enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Chef Dave from Potter’s Ranch. However, the most rewarding gift was $1000 worth of air time for our school, Calvary Christian. The NHS members who volunteered were Kelsey Curry, David Helton, Christina Sandberg and Chase VanderMeer. All the students thoroughly enjoyed the evening especially when a DJ from the station, Joe Jacobs, an alumnus of Calvary Christian School interviewed their adviser, Mrs. Martin while on the air.

Sixth Grade Hoe Down Day

We celebrated the hatching of 26 out of 36 eggs this year. We took care of the chicks for about two weeks in the sixth grade classrooms and then they moved to a more permanent home at the Bridges' Farm. In the month of October, visitors are welcome to visit the chicks at the free petting zoo at the Bridges' Farm on Saturdays and Sundays. See more pictures here.
Students Use New Microscope in Biology Lab

In a recent lab, biology students looked at various specimens under the microscope. They looked at hair follicles, hair roots, and bacteria. It was probably the first time for most of them to view live cells under the microscope. After that, they were able to view skin cells that they scraped from the inside of their check. Lastly, they looked at blood samples that they prepared. This lab is to prepare them for the next lab where they will be locating and labeling structures inside the cells.
Brittany, Jennifer and Kristen were using the new digital microscope that was purchased last year. Mr. Bowers was able to project their images up on the white board to show other students what they should be finding on the slides. This is a great teaching tool to help others that are struggling. Mr. Bowers was also able to use it to challenge those students that were finished with their slides to begin to locate some structures in the cells. They did not know exactly what they were looking at (this will come with the next lab), but they were able to recognize the structures and able to differentiate between types of structures.

CCS Reader Achieves 1000 Points in Accelerated Reader

Daniel Hales with Mrs. Norton, Librarian
Daniel Hales, a sixth grader, has recently achieved 1000 points in the Accelerated Reader on-line reading comprehension program. Points are earned by passing an on-line quiz over books that a student reads. Daniel has read and quizzed over 250 books in his AR “career” to achieve this 1,000-point plateau. The AR reading program was introduced to CCS elementary students five years ago by school librarian, Mary Norton. “Daniel loves reading”, says Mrs. Norton, “and it is no surprise that he has reached 1000 points. This is a great encouragement to all students, especially the three other sixth graders who are well on their way to achieving 1000 career points also.”
CCS Alumni Marina Logsden Teaches Map Skills to Fifth Grade
Calvary Christian School 2005 alumni, Marina Logsden, recently visited Mrs. Dunlap’s and Mrs. Taylor’s fifth grade class to share her knowledge of map reading and map skills. Miss Logsden, a graduate of Northern Kentucky University with a major in geography, introduced our fifth graders to the LINK- GIS (Geographic Information System), an internet-based tool for analyzing data and information about our area. Miss Logsden’s presentation complemented the fifth grade Heritage unit on maps and globes.

"Go The Extra Mile" Nominations
In keeping with this year's school theme, "Go The Extra Mile", CCS students and teachers have the opportunity to nominate someone who has gone the "extra mile." Nomination forms are available here and in the lobby. They were also distributed to all K4-6 classrooms and 7-12 homerooms. All approved nominees will be announced every Friday afternoon to encourage students to learn by these examples and "go the extra mile". (No one will be permitted to nominate themselves).
We will post several of the approved nominations here on our website with pictures and also inform parents via Edline emails all with the desire to glorify God by living out our 2009-2010 school theme.

Tail Waggin' Tutors
Calvary Offers Summer Reading Course with Certified Dogs

Pictured left to right: Andrew Meyer (CCS 3rd Grader) and Mrs. Jodi Harding (CCS 2nd Grade Teacher)
On August 3-5, several students in grades 1-3 at Calvary Christian School participated in the Tail Waggin’ Tutors summer course taught by CCS 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Harding. Mrs. Harding’s own READ certified black Labrador Retriever, Gracie, and CCS parent, Stephanie Meade’s Bernese Mountain dog, Callie, attended and encouraged the students in reading and confidence building. Students also gained knowledge of safety around dogs and basic dog care. The mission of the R.E.A.D. program is to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of registered therapy teams as literacy mentors. The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program improves children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog. But not just any dog, R.E.A.D. dogs are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team, going to schools, libraries and many other settings as reading companions for children. When asked what her favorite part of the program was CCS first grader Hannah Stremmel responded, “the petting!”
Lots of Fun!
Kids Day Out Summer Sports Camp
We had a great week with the Kids Day Out Summer Sports Camp. Over 20 students from grades 1-8 participated in a variety of activities such as swimming, ice skating, bowling, roller skating, and a picnic at Woodland Mound and the sprinkler park. The favorites of the week were ice skating and roller skating. See pictures.
Kindergarten Kiddie Karnival
On Saturday, July 18, many current and new families attended our Kindergarten Kiddie Karnival at Calvary Christian School. Children and parents met Miss Butler, CCS’ Kindergarten Teacher for the past 22 years, played games, enjoyed popcorn/cotton candy and enjoyed a wonderful show by Christian Illusionist, Ron Calhoun. Thank you for all who came to support Calvary Christian School! See pictures.
“Follow the Leader” Summer Workshop 2009

During the week of July 6-10, eight sixth grade students enjoyed learning about Christ’s leadership example through a variety of teambuilding activities and lessons. Led by Mrs. Kim Taylor, Mrs. Jodi Harding, and Miss Becca Harding, topics included Understanding Leadership, Understanding the Needs of Others, Leadership Skills/Practices, and Service. The highlight of the week was a visit to Action Ministries where students learned about the ministry and packed and prepared food for needy families. CCS students who took part in this workshop included Donny Elkins, Jacob Eten, Anthony Baldoni, Andrew Hogarth, Hannah Poe, Ashley Meyer, Sara Baker, and Hailey Ison.

Calvary Teacher Inspires Students to Write

Mrs. Heyob, CCS Language Arts Instructor, and Nathan Petrie
Julie Heyob, Language Arts teacher at Calvary Christian School, inspires her students to read, write well and succeed in all their pursuits. Last year she began teaching a Creative Writing class for Calvary Christian School and encouraged one student in particular, a promising eighth grader named Nathan Petrie, to the extent that Nathan has become a published author. Humble as can be, Mrs. Heyob takes little credit saying, “Nathan’s writing style is much more advanced than that of your average middle school student. Words pour from Nathan’s mind and imagination with ease. It is something that is natural for him.”
Nathan’s book, Whispers out of the Darkness, was published by Jeremiah Press in June 2009 and is a collection of fourteen short stories. His fantasy stories all center around the theme of deliverance. Nathan sees this theme as such an important aspect of his life that he finds it impossible to separate it from his writing. He is compelled to show others of the deliverance that he has found through Jesus Christ. To demonstrate this point, Nathan wrote in the title story a call to all those who share his beliefs, “Stand tall now and proclaim what you have seen. Speak in whispered roars. Be cunning as serpents and gentle as doves … [for] you have been delivered.” For years Nathan has written such stories. When he was in the fourth grade, he began writing a novel that he hopes to see published soon as well. Click here to read excerpts from Whispers out of the Darkness.
