High School Art I
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: None

This course is designed to integrate components of art production, criticism, history, and aesthetics. Assignments are based on elements and principles of art. The curriculum gives the student an opportunity to experience a wide-range of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, design, sculpture and ceramics. Students are encouraged to look at works of art in terms of their personal experience and to be able to describe, analyze, interpret, and judge works of art.

Students will be instructed in visual art through lecture, group discussion, chalkboard instruction and hands-on assignments. Students will be expected to be attentive class participants, to complete assignments on time, and to be prepared for exams. Evaluation will be based on note taking, exams and art projects.

The goal of this course is to provide the high school student with an elective opportunity to study and apply the fundamentals of visual art, with fine art and commercial art application in a hands-on approach. The student is expected to develop a visual art vocabulary.

High School Art II
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Art 1

Art II is for the serious and accomplished art student with proven abilities. Student must have taken Art I as a prerequisite and completed Art I with a minimum GPA of 96.5%. As with AP classes, instructor approval is needed for Art II qualification. Creative thinking is expected. Students will work independently when expected and cooperatively on teams when expected to deliver their best effort. The advanced art student is expected to be self starter, come to class on time and be prepared. The majority of work will be done in class however, some work may have to be completed outside of class. “Art in Action” worksheets will be used throughout the year to reinforce design principles and to inform the student of art related careers. The last project of each quarter is the student’s exam. Advanced assignments are developed in the areas drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. Units that are introduced for the first time are photography, image editing and digital video.

Students will be instructed in visual art through lecture, group discussion, chalkboard instruction, computer demonstration and hands-on assignments. Students will be expected to be attentive class participants, to complete assignments on time. Evaluation will be based on worksheet completion, testing and art production concerning; skill, assemblage, craftsmanship, and creativity.

The goal of this course is to provide opportunity for students to more fully explore the art media and processes introduced in Art I and to experience new technologies in visual art.
